I am a Jehovah's Witness, and i am 19 years old. I enjoy reading science fiction books such as THE HOST by Stephanie Meyer. you can pretty much read anything that doesn't have to do with immoral things like sex, drugs, or swear words. also, you wouldn't want to read anything that has a demonic influence such as witchcraft. We also try to stay away from the Twilight series only because they drink blood which shows disrespect for Jehovah's arrangement. Other then those things read whatever you want. Also, the bible is always a good choice.

You're not a "Jehovah's Witness in training", but I'll answer the question anyway.....

Much like with all forms of entertainment (books, movies, TV, etc...) Christians need to be on guard against involving themselves in things that God hates like immorality, spiritism, violence, and things of that nature. When selecting books to read, the choice of genre is really up to you, but you need to be selective. Read the book jacket or skim the back which usually gives a quick synopsis of the story. Flip through it and take note of any foul language, graphic sex descriptions, or graphic violence, or anything connected to spiritism......and if it has any of that, then be quick to put it back on the shelf and look for something more appropriate.

1 Thess. 5-21 — Make sure of all things; hold fast to what is fine.

Classic literature is always something nice to sit down with. I'm a big fan of Alexandre Dumas, the author of the Three Muskateers, The Man in the Iron Mask and the Count of Monte Cristo. Autobiographies are always good, be they about sports figures, movie stars, historical figures.

And, despite what a lot of people may say on this board, you can read a lot of non-Witness Bible materials.

Here's what to guard yourself against:

Books by leaders of Christendom, because a lot of what they say in those books is based on incorrect thinking. Books promoting spiritism (i.e. the Twilight series, vampires, werewolves, ghosts). Anything that is extremely graphic and violent in nature and depictions.

Remember that the wisdom from above is first of all chaste. The one question to always ask yourself when selecting reading material is: Is this something that Jesus would read and would find spiritually uplifting?

    Hope this helps!

    EDIT:

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE books promoted by foolish people who say "There is no God" (anything by Richard Dawkins), or books promoted by ex-Witnesses or apostates (books by Ray Franz, being one).

I look forward to the time when Mr. Franz's lackie followers die out as well...

    Is this serious?

If so, couldn't you ask some friends in the congregation. OR...... Jehovah witness in training..what's that mean exactly.. Do you mean you are studying the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses?

You can read a lot, just keep reading the Bible as well...avoid things w/magic/spiritism, sex, swearing, drugs etc... Follow Bible principles like sheltie lover said and like I said...if this is legit, ask some in the congregation and they can show you more scriptures and help you research yourself so you don't have to ask anyone.

    Smile.

NICE TRY! YOU JUST SEEM TO BE GIVING YOURSELF AWAY TOO EASILY. BUT, FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT, I WILL GIVE YOU THEIR ANSWER. JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES ARE DEVOTED FOLLOWERS OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. THEY WILL DO WHATEVER JESUS CHRIST WILL DO AND WILL NOT DO WHATEVER JESUS CHRIST WILL NOT DO. IN OTHER WORDS, THEY WILL DO EVERYTHING THAT JESUS CHRIST, THROUGH THE BIBLE, TELLS THEM TO DO. CONSIDERING ALL THESE, YOU, THROUGH JESUS CHRIST'S GUIDANCE, WILL BE ABLE TO DECIDE ON YOUR OWN WHAT TO READ AND WHAT NOT TO READ. IT IS JUST LIKE THE SAYING, "GIVE A PERSON A FISH AND THAT PERSON WILL BE FED FOR A DAY. BUT, TEACH A PERSON HOW TO FISH AND THAT PERSON WILL BE FED FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE."

The JWs are afraid of any intellectual question, or book, because they know how these threaten their simplistic thinking, or should i say lack of thinking.

Well, as a true worshipper of Jehovah, you should avoid reading anything with foul language. So “Cool” has a good point there. Here are some examples of posts on Y/A you should not read due to such foul language:

    I read LOTS of stuff!

    Mostly nonfiction.

The scripture at Philippians.4:8 will help you to keep in mind what is appropriate.
