Airplane mode means that the wireless features on the iPod Touch are disabled -- it cannot send or receive any signals when in this mode. This mode is specifically referred to as "airplane mode" because this feature will need to be activated if you wanted to use the device during an airplane flight.

"Airplane mode" means that it doesn't send out any radio signals. In the United States, it's against FCC regulations to use a cellular telephone on an airplane in flight. Gadgets like the iPod may try to make contact with cellular or data networks under normal conditions (receiving calls, checking e-mail, surfing the Web). Setting "airplane mode" on turns off any functions that require this kind of radio communication, and thus make it possible to use the device on an airplane without violating the FCC regulations.

In airplane mode, anything that requires an actual connection to a network won't work, but all other functions will work. It's better than nothing.

As an electronic gadget, you still have to turn the iPod off when the crew tells you to turn off electronic devices (that's a separate FAA regulation, not a FCC restriction), but you can use it at other times, in airplane mode.

It means all celliar data, wifi, and Bluetooth signals/transmissions are turned off. They call it "airplane mode" because it is mostly used on aircraft during takeoff and landing so you phone's signals won't interfere with equipment in the cockpit.

It doesn't interfere with the pilots transmissions. Basically, it isn't looking for any cell towers. You can run the apps on the phone in airplane mode, but no calls.

It means that your device is not in a connection and is safe to use on an aircraft in flight above 10,000 FT. You cannot text or call in this mood, but you may use applications and anything else that does not require you to have a connection.

It is another way of saying "wireless mode" on a Mac. It allows you to connect to a wireless network.
