Great question... I know, it can be very confusing...

Actually the "hull" really is not descriptive of either the length or width of the boat...

The hull of a boat is "the floaty part"... or the bottom (mostly all in the water) part of the boat.

Boaters typically will describe their boat as having: a "Vee" hull, a "flat" hull, or even a "multi-hull" etc.

the length of a boat is usually expressed simply by length... two common terms used are; "LOA" meaning "length over all" or "LWL" meaning "length of the boat's water line.

LWL - will tell you exactly how long the hull is... at the water level.

LOA - will tell you exactly how long the boat is... as many boats have "bow pulpits" (remember the scene in Titanic?) where the front of the boat extends way forward over the front of the hull.

Width of a boat is usually expressed in terms of width or "beam". The "beam of a boat is typically the widest point of the boat's hull... and this is typically the widest part of the boat as nothing but peoples arms and legs stick out beyond that.

So, for a very quick visual example, check out the link below... and thanks for the question!

Happy & Safe Boating,

John

PS. If you want to impress a sailor that wants to buy a boat -

let him know that the boat's "LWL" (length at Water Line) is much more important the the boat's "LOA" (Length over All).

Why?

Because the LWL will tell you how much "useable" space is actually in the boat... (So, a boat with a 26 foot LWL will actually have more useable space inside, then a boat that has a "LOA" of 28 feet. Because the Boat Mfg knows most boat buyers are impressed with the boat's LOA. Therefore, they add a 3 foot long bow pupit with a flag holder, and a 3 foot long swim platform on the rear (or stern)... They have now turned a 26 foot boat into a 32 foot boat... and get a 32 foot boat price.
