The Indonesian army invaded East Timor in 1975 and occupied the country for the next 24 years, calling the area "Timor Este" ( or something similar).

During that time the locals fought against the occupying Indonesian soldiers. Thousands of men, women and children were killed by the Indonesian army and thousands of the local women raped or taken as sex slaves for the soldiers in military brothels.

In 1999 there was a referendum and East Timor voted for independence. The local Indonesian army and its militia forces went crazy and rampaged through the country raping and burning even more intensely until the UN forces arrived and the militia and the Indonesia troops went to West Timor.
