If you are writing on a word process, such as Microsoft word, the dash is not a long hyphen, it is a dash. But you do need to use the hyphen button to get the dash. Here's what you do:
1. Type whatever you're typing, then press 'space'
2. Press the 'hyphen' button
3. Press another 'space' and keep typing.
4. After you press 'space' after the word proceeding the ordinary hyphen, the hyphen should automatically turn into a dash. If not, go back to the dash, and press the enter key (then backspace so it's where you want it). That should work.
It's not this complicated, I just want to make sure you understand. And by the way, it won't work on websites like this or other internet areas, but it will work on a word processor.
So go on and get to interrupting dialogue! :)
