Help for keeping Garden snails as pets?

Hi! I found a very small garden snail this morning, and I want to keep it. I put it in a WASHED sauce jar with holes in the lid. How do I take care of him now that he is all settled in?

    Hi Shannon,

Keeping garden snails is normally pretty easy.

For a start, you say it was a washed sauce jar. Please be aware that if you used dish soap, no matter how thoroughly you washed it afterwards there could still be some chemical residues that could harm your snail so if in doubt only use water to clean out a jar before use.

Snails like a moist, secretive environment so placing some potting compost on the base will give your snail somewhere to dig and hide, though you should also try to include some wood or stones under which it can hide safely. Also try to keep the container moist by spraying it with a houseplay spray gun when necessary. The holes in the lid are a good step because they will allow air to ciirculate, reducing the chances of mould growing in this humid environment.

Food-wise snails will eat all sorts of plant material such as lettuce, grass, cucumber, apple and so on so feel free to do some experimentation here. Try to ensure that there is always fresh food (so replace daily at least) and remove any uneaten food so it doesn't go off in the jar.

Lasty snails ideally need a source of calcium to help them keep their shells strong and an easy way to do this is to buy a little piece of cuttlefish from a pet store mainly sold for caged birds and add it to the jar. You will likely see after some time that your snail is nibbling away on it and this is a good sign.

Apart from this, remember that snails like a cool, dark environment as hot weather can cause them to dry out and die so try to keep the jar away from open windows etc. and in a more shady area of your home.

Follow these simple steps and you should be able to keep your snail fit and healthy and enjoy keeping your unusual pet. Best of luck!

    All the best,

    Richard
