There is a lot of 'horrible' music today. True. But not all music today is bad. If you take the pain to search for it, there are loads of good bands out there today. As for progressive rock the best rock musicians today play progressive rock. So it's surprising you didn't find good progressive rock. Sigur Rós, Anekdoten, Antimatter, Guilt Machine (Arjen Lucassen's band), Atomship, God Is an Astronaut, Riverside, The Morningside, Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mono, Ephrat, Porcupine Tree, No-Man, Demians, Incredible Expanding Mindfuck, Nosound, Sylvan, Pineapple Thief, Abigail's Ghost, Bass Communion, Phideaux, Gazpacho etc etc....Some of these are really awesome art rock bands. As for what you said about "no skill involved and every artist sounds the same", i can only feel sorry for you! Whether you like their music or not, the artists deserve respect.
And yeah, a progressive psychedelic blues rock can make be popular and make a living as long as the music is good. You can't expect to be a mediocre band in this non-mainstream genre and expect to make a big name for yourself.
