There are three notes to fragrances: Top, middle (often called heart notes) and base notes.

Top notes evaporate easily and in a short period of time. This is the first impression that you get from every fragrance. They last from 15-30 minutes only, and include the citric fragrances.

Middle notes are the personality of the fragrance. Their evaporation is relatively slow and can last up to 4 hours, depending on the fragrance. You can find woody and deep flowery scents (light flower scents can also be top notes) in this category.

Base notes are the ones that make a fragrance last. They evaporate very slowly and last up to 24 hours. However, you can only slightly perceive them after more or less an hour after the application. Musks and other animal-by products like grey amber (which is actually the whale's vomit found on the beach) are used as base notes, since they are very strong and fix the top and middle notes without interfering with the perfume's identity, and gives it that deep and attractive scent that only perfumes have.

    I hope this helps. :)
