If you try and sell an invention based upon blueprints what is to prevent someone from simply stealing the idea after they come to understand what you have developed.

Secondly, how do you know that someone has not already invented such a thing and already has a patent on the idea.

The answer is to get a patent yourself. There are actually 3 kinds of patents. As part of the process you will need to have a patent search performed. This will determine that your idea is new and will not conflict with the patent rights of someone else. When the invention challenges acceptable notions of physics and borders on what may be called a perpetual motion machine sometimes a working model is required.

Last you can have a great idea and a perfect patent but if the idea is not economical then it can not be worth the effort and the sale. Good luck.
