Fiji is an incredible destination. With over 300 islands they offer so much for so many different travel styles and budgets. In Fiji you can stay in everything from basic budget backpacker style accommodations on some of the nicest beaches in the world right up to ultra luxurious accommodations often frequented by Hollywood Stars. So from Accommodation perspective - they have it all.
If you are looking for diving - Fiji is the soft coral capital of the world and has some of the world's best diving. Not a diver, but just want to snorkel - no problem there is amazing snorkel with a lot of resorts having great snorkeling right from their beach so not snorkeling tours are required.
Beaches - they have them! Great beaches especially up in the Yasawa chain of islands. There is no shortage of remote island resorts with great beaches and perfect clear waters for those of you looking for just an R'n'R Vacations.
However, if you like to keep active you have lot of choices too - ziplining, surfing, diving, jet boating, white water rafting, eco tours and hiking, traditional village visits and stays, drink kava with the locals, golf, get your PADI dive certification, snorkel, fish, swim with sharks or dolphins....and the list goes on.
One of the best reasons to go to Fiji though - the people. The native Fijians are such warm, friendly, laid back people it is incredible. Their big "Bula" welcomes and fond farewell songs will make your visit such a memorable vacation you will long to go back time and time again!

Fiji is great. But not as good as Vanuatu which is FANTASTIC!!!
Vanuatu is closes to Australia which makes it cheaper. It also is a more exotic destination than Fiji.
You have to be careful which hotel/resort you pick in Fiji as 70% of them are located on a man made island built on swamplands and you white sandy beach is more like a brown muddy one. It also smells sometimes.
In Vanuatu you can walk into the town to buy cheap snacks, tours, souvenirs and meals. \
Hideaway island is amazing and has great snorkling. You can also visit Turtle Bay, Cascade Waterfalls and of course there is so much more to do.
Airfares are also cheaper out there generally.
While Fiji is not bad DO NOT stay on Sonsali Island, Denarau Island or at the Shangri-La. They are man made and the Shangri-La was bulldozed around so...
The people in Vanuatu are also friendlier.
