Arriving for work at British Airways' headquarters early this morning,staff about to discover what the airline's survival strategy would mean for them.At 7 am sharp,

the staff newspaper broke the news,nearly 6,000 jobs to go.On top of last year's cuts,that's now 13,000 jobs in total,almost one in four of BA's workforce.

We've got to make some important structural changes to our business.We can't simply wait for things to get better.We've had to address the real challenge that

the good no-frills airlines offers,close to home.And we've got to live with the reality that full-service airlines like Lufthansa and Air France are robust businesses as well,we've got to get our act together.

A few miles away at Heathrow,the front line in the battle is to restore British

Airways' fortunes.Passengers are being promised cheaper short-haul fares, and

tickets sold over the internet, as BA tries to compete with the low-cost operators.At

Gatwick they're already moving in.British Airways will cut costs by simplifying its aircraft fleet,reducing aircraft numbers,and turning round the remaining planes more quickly. Capacity here at Gatwick will be cut by half. The unions are

shocked at the scale of BA's plans.

But BA has gone from record profits to record losses in just six years. Staff are

one cost that's still too high and the airline says if job's aren't chopped, then there'll be very little future at all.
