He meant that our daily lives are built on the accomplishments of those who came before us.

A simple example are technological inventions. Our daily lives depend on these inventions, many of which were invented by people who have died. And furthermore, our newest inventions rely on the inventions and innovations of those before us. If we could not utilize the knowledge and innovation of previous generations, we would not have lives as we know them today.

That's just one example though. Many others beyond inventions can be gleaned from that as well.

Da Vinci did not remarked death in a literal sense. In my belief, he's referring death into failures and unsuccessful people around and close to us. In every individual's failure, we got to acquire knowledge, ideas, and discoveries. That life isn't just learning nor finding out nor studying only by ourselves. Likewise, it is by looking into others failures and miscarries. In that way of life, we aim to be headier, smarter, and more impertinent to face our battles of living.

The first answer ( Nemesis' ) has good identifiable position also.

In my opinion he is saying that if people didn't die then they would never be born. Can you imagine what the world would be like if everybody lived forever? We would have fallen off the planet years ago (okay not literally). Everybody is born, lives, then dies - where one door shuts another door opens.
