There are several reasons why it may be MORE practical to carry the AR than your regular old woods-master or .300 win mag.
Let's start with recoil. Have you ever seen the monster walking through the woods and even though you had practiced shooting your hunting rifle 1.2 million times, you still got what many call "buck fever"? Why is that? I don't know about you, but from time to time the recoil (kick) of a shouldered rifle causes me to think twice about my personal accuracy. With the AR platform, throw that second thought out of the deer stand. With the counter-inertia spring systems that the AR has, recoil is a thing of the past.
Who likes a bolt-action rifle? I mean really, who enjoys flipping, pulling, shoving and flipping after every simple squeeze of the trigger. Not as bad as the bolt is, "The gun that won the West!" A lever-action rifle can be a real treat to play with, but if it comes to multiple targets it can be a pain in the... let's just say fingers. With the AR, you never have to worry about an awkward after-shot moment where you are trying to quickly chamber another round because it is a semi-automatic rifle. I can hear the naysayers now, "I hate it when my semi-auto jams on me!" Good News! The AR platform has MOST of those kinks worked out since it has been used by the US Military for decades.
My mom always said to save the best for last, so here it is. Customization! With the AR the custom options are nearly endless. Want a red-dot scope to find that deer in the (almost dark)? Then the AR has a great rail system set up for you. Want a banana clip (depending on the state laws) to pump that squirrel full of boiling lead? The AR has several different magazine choices to fit your particular needs. Want a better cheek weld on that brand new scope? SIMPLY detach the adjustable stock and replace it with a custom stock to make you more comfortable. While all of us big, burly men don't want to admit that we have much in common with our wives, we do have this. We both love to accessorize. She likes to accessorize her wardrobe; I like to accessorize my guns. Pretty cool, huh?
Let's face it, the AR is not your typical, run-of-the-mill hunting rifle. But times are changing and some of us may be getting a little more advanced with the way we track bambi (or thumper). So give the AR a shot. Besides, who in the woods doesn't like to think of themself as "JIMBO: Deer Slayer"? You can look like it with an AR!
