If ape like creatures can evolve into a civilized race can elephants evolve into a civilized race too?

...if given enough time?

Is Babar the elephant someone from the future?

so, some of you believe elephants have the chance and ability to become a civilized race but you reject the notion of an intelligent disigner?

They're already quite civilised. They protect each other, they feel compassion and loyalty, they bury their dead. Or did you mean to become a species that is capable of building complex habitats and manipulating it's environment?

They have just as much chance of evolving the ability to regrow limbs or to only grow to the size of dogs. It could happen, but the environmental and selective pressures and mutations required are completely unpredictable. Who knows what will happen in a billion years.

The chance is slight, but there is evidence that a species can grow more intelligent and develop complex rituals and social structures over vast periods of time. There is no real evidence for an "Intelligent Designer". Elephants creating complex societies is a vastly higher likelihood.

Think about that for a moment.

The key word is self-awareness. Some animals have a higher degree of self-awareness. We have the highest.

Every species fits into an evolutionary niche. If one species becomes extinct, another may occupy its niche. By luck or Destiny, mankind has met the ideal, or perhaps rather said the necessary conditions for the nourishing of its brain to transcend the critical evolutionary point. Have in mind that there were around seven humanoids of which only we have survived the famine and all that which came with natural cataclysms.

The big question is if we are the only ones which may occupy this environmental niche. I think that we are the "chosen child" and that others may occupy our place only if we become extinct.

Speaking from a theist angle, would God allow such waste of time? Theologically speaking, God has made a deal with mankind to protect and guide it. We only have some 250 million years left of evolution to accomplish anything more. After that, things will start burning. But, lets first face the upcoming Ice Age.

Well for one, the term "race" isn't really correct, because a "race" is a species... so all ethnic backgrounds would fall under "the human race"... but for ease I'll say race. Ok... the physical differences that have been studied thoroughly are generally the following... there are 3 large distinct groups. White (European ancestry)- very little pigment in the skin, eyes are closer together, noses are longer and skinner. Body frame is generally average compared to the others. Nose bone protrudes past upper jaw. Black (African ancestry)- Generally taller and lengthier, eyes are more spread out, nose is wider. Have the most pigment in the skin. Nose bone does NOT protrude past the upper jaw, the jaw protrudes further. Asian (Asian ancestry, as well as Native American and Islander)- Shorter and stockier, eyes at mid-distance apart, noses are wide. They are in between on the pigment scale, and the nose bone protrudes as far as the jaw (the same). These differences actually only came about in the past 90,000 years, and before that we were all in Africa (though different looking than modern blacks). The here are 3 theories on how we got out of Africa, but that's another story. The differences in physical appearance between the 3 main races came about due to climate (equator, temperature, humidity) and the rest likely came about due to sexual selection (what was deemed attractive for mates to have in their particular cultures).

I don't reject the notion of an intelligent designer. I believe in God and I believe in evolution. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

If they have a need to, then I don't see why not. As of now they have no natural predators that I am aware of, however, so they have no need to evolve/adapt. Poaching is their only threat, and there is not a single reasonable adaptation they can develop to prevent that.

Dolphins have large brains but lack the mother of all invention which is necessity. Nor do they have a physical environment or body to advance themselves to the point of total annihilation.

    Yes, it is possible.

Yes, Babar is from the future.

Sure, in theory. Evolution relies on random mutations though, and so if certain mutations dont happen to happen, natural selection cant select them for survival.

It's possible, but not every series of environmental constrainst lead to sapiens. In fact it seems like few do.

Absolutely. They can do it while typing out all the works of Shakespeare by tapping random keys with their trunks. . .given enough time, of course. :)
