Why is a hotel pan called a hotel pan in the culinary arts?

just that why is a hotel pan called a hotel pan in the resturaunt biz, it's the only one of the pans that isn't called by a number. the others start out as a half and go all the way to a 9 pans. i was thinking that it has something to do with it being the "whole pan" if you will cause every pan... show more just that why is a hotel pan called a hotel pan in the resturaunt biz, it's the only one of the pans that isn't called by a number. the others start out as a half and go all the way to a 9 pans. i was thinking that it has something to do with it being the "whole pan" if you will cause every pan after that is numberd by how many times it can go into it. well if anyone know's let me know cause at my work this has become a topic of interest.
