The impact of the Tennessee Valley Authority has been profound and far-reaching in the areas it serves. Aside from generating power to an area of the country that, before TVA's creation in 1933, was widely known to be 100 years behind the rest of the country (including the South), the TVA was, and continues to be involved in economic development, recreation, education and community involvement in nearly all of Tennessee and parts of Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and Mississippi. Also, it stopped reveiving federal funding in the 1950s and while it's wholly owned by the federal government, is self sustaining from the money is makes through power generation. So whenever you hear people talk about their 'tax dollars' funding TVA, they're misinformed. There's a really good Doumentary Channel movie you can stream on Youtube for free called "Built for the People." You can search Youtube for it, or click the links below. It's divided into two parts. Very well done and gives an overview - good and bad - of the TVA and it's impact. You'll be surprised. I never knew it's impact stretched into things like helping win WWII by supporting development of the A-bomb in Oak Ridge and environmental conservation of endangered species. Definitely more than a power company.
