Shouldn't Bo Jackson be considered the biggest BUST in NFL Draft history?

Bust list has always been based on how well the player contributed to the team that drafted him, usually very high, right? Well Tampa Bay drafted Bo #1 overall in 1986 and got ZIP from him. Not a game, not a rush. And Bucs got zero compensation, nothing. At least Ryan Leaf threw some TDs and won some games for the Chargers.

Sure Bo was great for the Raiders but then Tony Mandarich was great for the Colts, protecting a young Peyton Manning for several seasons. Yet Mandarich is considered the biggest bust of all time by many. So should Bo!

What do u think?

Update:

Not the same. Colts got 2 good players and a #1 pick from the Broncos in a trade.

Bucs got NOTHING from Bo. No games, no rushes, no picks. It was like having no pick at all.

Update 2:

Didnt say Bo was a bust because he was injured. Tampa drafted him #1 overall and got NOTHING. Colts at least got 2 Pro Bowlers from trading Elway. Bucs got NOTHING. Imagine how good they mightve been had they drafted Jim Everett or Leslie O'Neal, two Pro Bowl players.

No cus Bucs were not smart enuf to take Bo threat serious that he did not want to play for them and would go to play MLB like the Colt did with Elway. This is why they were the BUST of the NFL back in the 80s. When you are a joke of the NFL you do not give one of the greatest athletes in the world an ultimatum to choose baseball or football. Also "Bust list has always been based on how well the player contributed to the team that drafted him, usually very high, right?" is only true IF that player actually plays for that team. It was one of the BUST picks by a team of all time but calling Bo a BUST player is NOT the same thing. Also with today's signing bonus and huge contracts vs 80s you cant even compare cus Jamarcus Russell and David Carr are just stealing millions each year

Not as recent as Ryan Leaf or David Klingler, but in 1983, with all of those great quarterbacks, the Kansas City Chiefs with the 7th pick overall, selected Todd Blackledge. He was the second quarterback taken that year behind John Elway and ahead of Jim Kelly, Todd Eason, Ken O'Brien and Dan Marino. Then Blackledge went on to be a TOTAL BUST!

As far as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ... they weren't supposed to get anything for him. He didn't owe them jack.

... Jackson was drafted first overall in the 1986 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, the Buccaneers, not wanting their new draftee to injure himself playing baseball for Auburn that year ... took Jackson on a trip in a private plane that cost him his college eligibility. In other words they tried to **** him.

They also gave Jackson an ultimatum to choose baseball or football.

This prompted him to sign with the Kansas City Royals. Since he did not sign with a team by the 1987 draft, his rights were forfeited by Tampa Bay and his name was thrown back into the draft. (they could have drafted him again ... they chose not to or it wasn't their turn ... either way the Raiders got him. The rest is history.

They got exactly what they deserved.

If the Bucs had cared about Bo they just might have been something back then but they deliberately tried to screw him then pressure him into signing with them.

No ... Bo Jackson was not a bust.

    "twas injuries killed the beast"

Tampa Bay got nothing from Bo because of their own actions. If you want to remember this correctly it was their dirty dealings with him to prevent him from playing baseball with Auburn by getting him on a private plane that cost him his senior year of ball that started this whole mess. Then they gave him an ultimatum of either football or baseball after he was pissed that they played him to potentially avoid him getting injured. Well Bo chose baseball likely to spite the Bucs who pretty much did him wrong right from the start and Tampa made no further attmepts to sign him before they lost his draft rights. He was drafted a second time (in the 7th round) and until the hip injury was a dominating RB. Hardly a bust when a 7th rounder becomes a dominating force on the field. Dont blame Bo for the mess Tampa created and it is clearly a huge mistake to label a guy a bust on a team error and based on his production when he played.

The Bucs got nothing for Bo because they failed to sign him....how does that make him a bust? When he got drafted and the Raiders actually signed him he produced. Poor argument, Ryan Leaf took a ton of money (Jackson didnt take a dime from the Bucs) and didnt produce and I can name many top 5 picks who failed miserably while cashing huge paychecks. Your definition of a bust is way off....hell why not say Lenny Bias was the biggest bust in sports history since he went and died before he ever played a game (and collected a signing bonus).

  • Okay, since everyone else pretty much handed you your azz on the Bo Jackson part, I'll do the same with Tony Mandarich. He was far from "great" with the Colts. He only started 32 games in three years with a bad team (only one year with Manning, his rookie season, not "several"), and the Colts replaced him as soon as possible.

Gotta go with Viphockey and the other guys on this one, It was Tampa's fault in many ways for getting nothing out of Bo and you can't lump a guy who at least had a succesful career with guys who did nothing in the NFL. In my opinion Tim Couch is the worst bust ever since he was #1 overall and completely set back the entire Browns organization for another couple of years since they had to start from scratch again.

Well, at least Bo made somewhat of an impact, in fact one of his most famous moments was against the biggest bust for me as a Seahawks fan, Brian Bosworth and on national television! Once the Boz had to dump the 'roids, he was never the same.

Are you kidding? Bo got injured, which is part of the game in football. You can't put him in the category with Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Tim Couch, Heath Shuler and players like that.
