From what I have read in the different forums that deal with PM, results of treatment vary from one individual to another. Some people have lots of pain, others none at all; weakness of proximal muscles are a constant but to different degrees. I was diagnosed last August: no pain, but could not get up from a lower sitting position, could not run, lost 35 pounds ( loss of muscle mostly). Went through all the possible tests to eliminate the possibility of cancer (22 days in the hospital). The muscle biopsy was the clincher in the diagnosis. Treatment consisted in prednisone (50 mg), methotrexate (injected), and later on, perfusion of immunoglobulin (IVIG) along with physiotherapy (specific exercises). I also was given other drugs to combat the bad side-effects of the treatment. I finally got better after some three months of treatment. I am now in the process of reducing the prednisone (steroid) which is a dangerous drug. I have not regained my former strength and resistance (I would say I am at 75%) but I feel better.
