the Galaxy was a design expected to draw the family dad in who wanted some performance and some luxury without the price of luxury models. the cars were found to be good for Nascar racing from early on and performance motors were being put in them to be certifiable for nascar racing. ford offered this car in many flavors galaxy, galaxy-xl, galaxy xlt. 4 door, 2 door, manual or automatic, and interiors from police nauguhyde to soft and plush. engines ranged from just enough to get her rolling to 427 overhead cam. in muscle car ranks it really wasn't exactly thought of as "muscle" it was more "intercepter" it was in the catagory of cars like the impalla ss, plymouth coronet etc.
fairlane was fords 1st attempt at mucle and even developed the thunderbolt model for race. contrary to many Mustang wasnt started out to be a performance "pony" car. it was meant to attract the young moms wanting a just my size car. the hot little windsor engine, the 260 cubic inch was fitted first into a Falcon sprint model. in 1963! 1 1/2 years before the Mustang was born. this model Falcon looked like a shrunken galaxy 500. the 1964 and 65 models got a styling upgrade and were available in the futura sprint option. this was the works for this period and now in 65 had Fords new 289 motor with a factory 4 brl. duel exhaust, 4 speed and offered in a convertable to boot. 6 mths later Mustang is let out of the pen and sprint fades into the sunset.
