The 420 meaning means many things to many people. Most see the 420 meaning as a symbol for National Weed Day. There is still debate on how this day, and these numbers, became symbols for pot however. But no matter how

it happened, today is a landmark in pot culture, and thousands will be lighting up in honor of it. Yet today isn't just about marijuana and having fun - far from it for some. In fact, thanks to certain violent acts, and infamous people, the 420 meaning is quite different for others.

Even before National Weed Day, April 20th was an infamous milestone. Today is Adolf Hitler's birthday, which is only celebrated today by neo-Nazis. For the rest of the world, this date was the first stepping stone towards the horrors of WWII, most of which Hitler caused.

It took a few decades for the 420 meaning to change, due to pot smokers. The origins of how they made April 20th theirs is still in question, but it may trace to the early 70s. In 1971, five friends in San Rafael High School allegedly came to the Point Reyes forest, to find a marijuana crop a Coast Guard member left behind.

The 'Waldos' went out at 4:20, and then supposedly used the numbers as a code word for pot. Although this may not have happened on April 20th, the code came to define the culture. Now the 420 meaning has become a code for National Weed Day, held every April 20th. As such, the Waldos' code is now no longer hard to break.

To smokers and pro-pot activists, the 420 meaning is to honor pot, and to protest how authorities have demonized it. They may regard marijuana arrests as a tragedy - but it isn't the real tragedy of the day.

Until 1999, the most infamy around April 20th was that it was Hitler's birthday. That changed with the Columbine massacre, which happened 11 years ago today. Although the subculture regards this as a day about pot, much of America associates today with Columbine.Unofficial National Weed Day is April 20, or 4/20. The meaning of 4 20: Four Twenty has come to be synonymous with pot smoking marijuana culture. Once a secret code for those in the know, 4 20 is becoming mainstream, part and parcel of the rallying cry being expressed by Americans everywhere: Free the Weed!

4 20 is a cultural meme, a unit of cultural transmission. Pot smokers celebrate the symbolic number. The term Four Twenty is a means to communicate with and identify fellow pot smokers. The twentieth day of the fourth month, April 20, has come to be a Stoner Holiday, a day for the celebration of the culture and identity surrounding marijuana.

Four Twenty's origins indicate the number is actually a reference to not a date, but a time of day. 4:20 p.m. is a time to smoke marijuana. The origin story of the Four Twenty meme involves a narrative where 4:20 was the time in the afternoon when a group of friends would meet and smoke pot.

The term originated from a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California, United States in 1971. The teens would meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana at the Louis Pasteur statue.

According to an April 2009 article on the The Huffington Post, the group called itself the Waldos because its members hung out by a wall after school. Writer Ryan Grim, citing interviews with anonymous Waldos, claims that the group met by the statue at 4:20 p.m. to begin a search for a crop of abandoned cannabis growing near Point Reyes that they had heard about. They never found the stash, Grim writes, but smoked plenty of marijuana while looking for it.

your suppose to plant marijuana seeds in march (that is when the weather won't freeze anymore) and it takes a month to grow. After it's harvested and dried and sold it's around april 20th. Well it was anyway when there were large crops of it back in the day. Now who decided to call it 420? I don't think anyone will ever know. But it is not a police code or was one in progress my uncle and cousin are police officers and I asked them a long time ago. It was just code for the day everyone could buy there freshly harvested pot. it spread and now it means national smoking day.

Its a number. Between 419 and 421. Duh. It also is the day a bunch of immature stoners smoke excessive amounts of weed in an attempt to have it legalized.
