Why did the Democrats prevent Miguel Estrada from becoming a Federal judge?

It is widely believed that he would have eventually become the first Hispanic justice on the Supreme Court. What was the reasoning behind blocking him?

Because he wasn't a Democrat. :) Minorities in positions of power are fine and dandy as long as they fall within party philosophy. Since Mr. Estrada wasn't a liberal zombie, the Democratically-controlled Congress didn't seem to think it was necessary to appoint him.
