If you're going to use a surname as a first name, then use an unusal first name as the surname:

    Thayer Sylvanus

The Hotel Thayer at West Point, NY was named for Colonel Sylvanus Thayer, superintendent of the Academy* from 1817 to 1833.

*USMA (United States Military Academy, also called West Point)

You could always create a last name using both of your last names, like combine parts of both to make a totally new name. But if your heart is set on your child having your last name then that is totally okay. I would want the same if I were you. Depending on what your wife's last name is, I would say consider making her last name the baby's first or middle name. Hyphenating the two names could work, depending on what they are. Talk it out and explain to her that you feel like you aren't the father... Maybe she'll understand.
