You win at your school, then at the county level, then regionals, then nationals, and finally get to the International Fair. By this time, most of the weak science has been weeded out and most of the students are doing professional level work or have linked up with a professional. The one time I judged at the international level, the winner had discovered a new species of shrimp but left the description to a professional, who named it after her. I thought that her work was second to a boy who did a behavioral study on a group of birds and did all the work himself. I got outvoted.
