What kind of car is it? If the valves are tapping first check the oil. Low oil can cause a top end noise. If the oil is good a valve adjustment should do. Make sure it's not just fuel injectors tapping. On some cars they are louder than others. No cheap fix for that. And sometimes it's normal.

Engines don't tap. Valves can sometimes tap, tap, tap in an old engine. To fix the tapping, try adjusting the valves, or replace the valve lifters. Sometimes a piston will make knocking noises. This is not the same as tapping.

It depends on what's tapping, need more information.
