Why do conservatives call liberals "fascists" when fascism is more of a right wing ideology?

Why do conservatives call liberals "fascist" when you really think about it, fascism is more associated with the right then it is with a left? If one takes right-wing policies far enough you basically have fascism.

Because Glenn Beck used the term one and it spread like wildfire in their rhetoric. They also say that Nazism is a left ideology too.

From our good friends at Wikipedia

"Fascism is a radical and authoritarian nationalist political ideology. Fascists seek to organize a nation on corporatist perspectives; values; and systems such as the political system and the economy. Scholars generally consider fascism to be on the far right of the conventional left-right political spectrum."

In an article in the 1932 Enciclopedia Italiana, written by Giovanni Gentile and attributed to Benito Mussolini, fascism is described as a system in which "The State not only is authority which governs and molds individual wills with laws and values of spiritual life, but it is also power which makes its will prevail abroad.... For the Fascist, everything is within the State and... neither individuals nor groups are outside the State.... For Fascism, the State is an absolute, before which individuals or groups are only relative...."

Mussolini, in a speech delivered on October 28, 1925, stated the following maxim that encapsulates the fascist philosophy: "Tutto nello Stato, niente al di fuori dello Stato, nulla contro lo Stato." ("Everything in the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State".) Therefore, he reasoned, all individuals' business is the state's business, and the state's existence is the sole duty of the individual.

Fascism leans more to the socialist side than to the right.

As an economic system, fascism is socialism with a capitalist veneer. The word derives from fasces, the Roman symbol of collectivism and power: a tied bundle of rods with a protruding ax. In its day (the 1920s and 1930s), fascism was seen as the happy medium between boom-and-bust-prone liberal capitalism, with its alleged class conflict, wasteful competition, and profit-oriented egoism, and revolutionary Marxism, with its violent and socially divisive persecution of the bourgeoisie. Fascism substituted the particularity of nationalism and racialism—“blood and soil”—for the internationalism of both classical liberalism and Marxism.

  • Fascism is left wing, Progressives have re-written history to paint it out as right wing. Tell me, how is it associated with the right???

A book by noted peer reviewed scholar Jonah Goldberg

  • I don't call liberals fascist, because that's not correct. The more appropriate term is Marxist, which is very correct. I can't stand when liberals call themselves "centrists" or "progressives".

"Yes, nationalize this, take that away from him and give it to that guy...I'm a centrist!". LOL

Big centralized government that takes over everything and controls every aspect of your life. That is what liberals promote.

    Fascism is a left-wing ideology.

Extreme Right Wing = Anarchy (In America)

Why can the Oklahoma City bombers be Right Wing extremest... AND also be fascist? How does that compute in your people's pea brains?

From my observations, rightwingers are seriously lacking in education and the ability to apply logic, and, therefore, have no concept of what constitutes fascism. Or anything else, for that matter.

Fascism: often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.

    sounds liberal to me.
