What kind of damage would a 50 caliber bullet do to a person?

How much damage would a 50 caliber bullet do to a person at close and long range? How much damage would it create if it was full metal jacket and if it was hallow point? And would it blow off someones head or arm, or would it just created a hole in the person? This is research for a story that I am writing, and I would like it to be as accurate as possible. Thank you :)

I can tell you being I have vast military experience and have known many who have served in Iraq/Afghanistan and been attached with sniper units confirmed kills such as one from over a mile away from a Barret 50 caliber rifle split a johnny jihad in half from the waist and the torso and yes this kill was confirmed as cutting the guy in half at the waist with one round. So if it could do that, you could imagine what it could do to other limbs or parts of the body.

From what I have heard from military friends, if you are hit by a 50 cal sniper round, you basically pop like a grape. I have seen a picture of a friend of mine, who was in Afghanistan and a medic there took a picture of a guys foot that had been hit by one. I couldn't tell it was a foot. It was just a mess of flesh. It really doesn't matter what type of 50 hits you, FMJ or HP, it's not good. Stay away from being shot by one, LOL.

Well, as long as you only ask once. See the movie, 'Miami Vice II'. Michael Mann did considerable research before he filmed the 50 caliber scenes.

depends on what .50 caliber cartridge your talking about, since there are a few like the .50 AE, .500 S&W Magnum, .50 BMG.

but I assume your talking about the .50 BMG, yes it would tear a person limb from limb if hitting the right spot(the joints), it could also tear your head off if it hit just below your chin, into your neck and broke the spine, taking the head with the bullet.

hollow points would act explosively inside a person, a FMJ would just pass through and through, causing a 1/2" hole both ways.

Urban legend. I was a machine gunner in the Marines for six years on an M2. It doesn't work. It sounds good but it's not true. Sorry to shoot down the idea. pretty cool thought, though, huh?
