Do you prefer using a rear mounted basket or panniers with your hybrid/mountain bike?

I'm trying to decide which is more convenient and functional -- using a removable rear-mounted basket or using a rear pannier. I've never used either, and I'm going to use it for grocery shopping. I've never used either, and I'm going to use it for grocery shopping. If I get a basket that snaps in place on the rear rack, I assume I'll need bungee cords so that nothing bounces out. I don't like the way permanent side baskets look on the bike.

I've read that with the panniers, or grocery bag, sometimes feet hit them while pedaling.

My local bike shop sells rear racks and a grocery pannier and baskets, but they are so expensive. The rear racks are $45.99 and $54.99
The grocery pannier thing is $69.99 for one bag
The snap-on removable basket is $69.99

I'm afraid to order online because I don't know the quality, and I don't want to order something that might not fit right. Plus I don't know how to install this stuff on my own.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
