There are cultural events taking place all over France and they range from Music of all kinds, Film, Opera, Ballet ,Art , Gastronomy, Wine, Folklore,Theatre, Religious, Book Fairs, special exhibitions, and also localised events such as Son et Lumière and pageantry outside castles, cathedrals and sites of particular interest. There also are re-enactments of certain major events based on specific anniversaries and historical processions, and special annual events like the Nice flower festival, the gypsy traditional annual pilgrimages to Saintes Marie- de- la-mer, or famous Pardons in Brittany for which people dig out their traditional local costumes.
For Americans the Cannes international Film Festival that takes place annually is of particular interest and is where Grace Kelly met the Prince of Monaco to whom she eventually got married to. This year "Robin Hood," starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett and directed by Ridley Scott, will open the Cannes Film Festival in May.
The most famous Son et Lumière in France is held at Le Lude in the Loire Valley, in which hundreds of local people participate, but others take place throughout the summer season in a number of localities. Another is the show outside the Palais des Papes in Avignon as well as the annual festival.
