If St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland why does my Irish friend keep telling me to pet his python?

Should I warn him that his animal friend is an imposter?

Many of the stories traditionally associated with St. Patrick, including the famous account of his banishing all the snakes from Ireland, are false, the products of hundreds of years of exaggerated storytelling.

Saint Patrick never drove the snakes from Ireland. That is a myth.

From Wikipedia: "Pious legend credits Patrick with banishing snakes from the island, though all evidence suggests that post-glacial Ireland never had snakes;[47] one suggestion is that snakes referred to the serpent symbolism of the Druids of that time and place, as shown for instance on coins minted in Gaul (see Carnutes), or that it could have referred to beliefs such as Pelagianism, symbolised as “serpents”.

So...take that for what you will. Pythons are icky.

Because Python is not a snake, it's a dinopytholorus billions of years old.

You can kick the snakes out, but they're gonna get back in.

    They're persistent like that.
