Theme parks are thin on the ground in France, mainly north or east of Paris, so the weather is open to chance. Further south there are two near Poitiers, another between Bordeaux and Montauban, two are quite close to Lyon and one on the outskirts of Marseilles. So you have a choice, a short drive and possibly inclement weather or a long drive and probably sunshine.
As for mid-August, that is when we are on holiday – it’s manic at such places, long queues for everything.
Now, I do not know the ferry route you are considering, if you are considering the Calais routes then you have a long drive – very long – not good for the little ones – they get very agitated and bored. My suggestion would be to consider, St.Malo, Cherbourg or Ouistreham if you wish to go south for sunshine. Poitiers is only 5 hours from St.Malo; Bordeaux/Montauban is around 8 hours. As for Marseilles, you really need an overnight stop, especially with little ones.
Now I turn my attention to “villas”, looking at my availability lists prices for the same are horrendously expensive for the dates you require especially as you need to sleep 8 people – 1884 – 4337 Euros a week. Gites/Cottages on the other hand are somewhat cheaper: 705 – 2046 Euros a week. The closer you are to the Mediterranean the more expensive it becomes and you need to book early otherwise you are left with the bottom end of the market.
Now I am not trying to put you off by any stretch of the imagination, I am trying to be practical. So give this idea some thought: How about the southern coast of Brittany, lots to do, plenty of things to see, including beaches, zoos and much more, also somewhat cheaper than further south and a lot less driving – good weather as well!!
