'Bosom Friends' or 'Bosom Buddies' are friends that are inseparable like bosoms which is another word for breasts on the body.

This phrase is a play on words. Just like two real breasts are close to each other and usually seen together, the term Bosom Friends indicates that the two friends have an extremely close relationship, they are rarely seen apart, and the bond between them is very tight.

A confidante or companion. Those two would be the poshest of the options. Everyday use could be pal, chum, mate, buddy and so on but I wouldn't call them in line with the Queen's good english.
