Wells was sitting alone at a party and when asked what he was doing he replied he was writing his own epitaph "God damn you all, I told you so." Wells died August 13, 1946 and his ashes were cast on the sea.

According to WIKIPEDIA - He was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium on 16 August 1946 and his ashes were later scattered at sea. A commemorative blue plaque in his honour was installed at his home in Regent's Park.
