I found that Malta is a more old fashioned holiday place. It is beautiful with loads to see but they do not have theme parks, water parks etc. For history buffs, it is perfect. There is wonderful Valletta and Mdina which even kids love. There is great swimming and snorkelling and diving and the water is clear. If all your family can swim, the rocky beaches are fantastic with the advantage of not getting sand everywhere! There are a few sandy beaches which are lovely. My favourite is at the top of the island and not so known by tourists. It's called Armier Bay and there is also Little Armier but you do need to get on a bus from Mellieha (10 mins) or drive to get there.

There are various boat trips from Sliema or Bugibba including the glass bottom boat which is fun. The Blue Grotto is worth going too - but go fairly early in the morning before the coach trippers get there so you don't queue for too long! Hagar Qim is a neolithic temple which is fascinating because you can walk round it and really get a feel of what it must have been like for stone age man.

Goz o is also worth a look - it's like going back in time 50 years! The ferry over to the island is great fun and you get lovely views of the rock formations and the different colour seas around there.

Malta is a working island which has so much to offer - If your kids are into swimming and sea activities they will love that side of it. There is a night life around the Paceville area but nothing like on the scale of Ibiza and the like - but if you want to sleep, don't stay near there! If you hire a car and like exploring the island for hidden treasures, great beaches/swimming places, good food and lovely people you can have a great time but if you only want to sit on a beach, there will probably not be enough for you there. It is great for younger kids and those who are mad on history - from neolithic to WW2 but possibly not for teenagers who want nightlife, noise and fast food!

I am a Maltaphile, I love the place but the beauty of it is it is still the sort of place where you get lost in the car off the tourist track and find yourself invited to a wedding and make friends for life! You go to a local shop, get frustrated coz you wait ages to be served while they gossip but find yourself drawn into the conversation. The North of the island (Mellieha area) is much prettier than the south but if you are not driving, Sliema is handy for busses but is built up and congested. Buggiba is very down market - kareoke and bingo everywhere and busses stop by 9pm there whereas in Sliema they run to the early hours. Qawra is a bit better.
