The first internal combustion petroleum fueled motorcycle was the Daimler Reitwagen. It was designed and built by the German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in Bad Cannstatt in 1885.
If a two-wheeled vehicle with steam propulsion is considered a motorcycle, then the first was the French Michaux-Perreaux steam bicycle of 1868.
In 1894, Hildebrand & Wolfmüller became the first series production motorcycle.
As far as Manufacturers no longer in production, I'd say United Kingdom's Excelsior (Coventry) — (1896-1965).
As far as current production, Moto Guzzi, also known as Guzzi, is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer that has endured from the industry's infancy to its place today as the oldest European manufacturer in continuous motorcycle production (Established in 1921).
Sachs Motorcycles is a German based motorcycle manufacturer, founded in 1886 in Schweinfurt. It is one of the world's oldest motorcycle manufacturers. (Triumph produced bikes in 1902 and Harley-Davidson in 1903)
Sachs manufactured their first motorcycle in 1904. Sachs took over Victoria, Express and DKW in the 1960s, and began to supply motorcycles for the German Federal Armed Forces in 1992.
In recent times, Sachs had been reduced to local assembly of small, cheap, Chinese-sourced scooters, which weren't doing well. The distinctive Sachs MadAss was the last Sachs-engineered motorcycle made.

All the early examples of motorcycles looked like glorified bicycles with engines attached. The frames were rigid and the spring below the leather saddle was the only cushioning available. Sadly they are all defunct now. Some were of French origin, whereas others were German.
It is only after the World Wars, did motorcycles come into some sort of reckoning. Then of course you had the Ariels, and Matchless and BSA. Some of the more exotic were the Sunbean and the Vincent which only the very affluent could afford to buy.
Each bike had a history which it was proud of. Some were cheap and catered to the masses whereas others had unique design and exotic specifications.
