What was the main theme of "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald?

I need help interpreting the main message of "The Great Gatsby." Was it:

1) A love story

2) A social commentary on life in the 1920s

Or something else?

It was a critique of 1920s high society based in a love story. Daisy Buchanan is torn between her arrogant, old money husband, Tom Buchanan, and the new money millionaire, Jay Gatsby. Each of the characters reflects the theme of the time period. Tom Buchanan is a millionaire concerned with his social status. Jay Gatsby has a very questionable past. Daisy Buchanan is shallow and can't decide between true love with Gatsby or maintaining appearances with her husband. The whole story is set in the backdrop of the 1920s, which is portrayed as an aimless era of juvenile partying, flamboyance, and socialising.

Although there is a love story in it, it's not about love, it's a social commentary on life in the 1920s and shows much of society's views at the time and how you weren't able to just "fall in love" with just anybody. The wealthy had to marry the wealthy, and the poor with the poor.
