It was a debate, and Obama was defending the ideas from the Democrats. It did not appear to be a brainstorming session. To be fair, the Republicans were arguing also, but they had obviously read the previous bills and wanted to add some of their own ideas after being left out of the previous closed negotiations between Democrats.
This meeting then sets up what I heard this morning that Democrats are strongly considering the reconciliation 51-vote option and making it seem like the Republicans are just blocking the bill. Well, they seem to be voting against a bill that they pointed out a lot of problems with. Why should they vote for it? Obama made it sound like he was starting to come around on tort reform but put nothing in his proposal at all.
