If the Hebrew word YOM (יום) does not always mean a 24 hour day, then how will we prove a Six Day Creation?

YOM (יום) is numbered H3117 in Strong's lexicon. We can see that the word is generally used as day (either 12 hour day time or 24 hour day)

But there are cases where the same word is used as Year also.

Exo 13:10 Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year<H3117> to year.<H3117>

Num 9:22 Or whether it were two days,<H3117> or a month, or a year,<H3117> that the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle... (day is Yom, Year is also Yom)

Jdg 11:40 That the daughters of Israel went yearly<H3117> <H3117> to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days<H3117> in a year. (day is Yom, Year is also Yom, assume that they lament daily)

1Sa 2:19 Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, <H3117> <H3117> when she came up with her husband to offerthe yearly<H3117> sacrifice. (If YOM is a 24 hour day, How will Hannah travel from Ramah in Ephraim to Gilgal near Jericho daily.)

These are not exceptions, there are quite a lot of verses

(If you need to point out that Evening & Morning so and so day ... daytime + night is a day not evening and morning.)

    . Creative days not 24-hour days

    “Day” can mean simply period of time. Ge 2:4

    Day with God can be a long time. Ps 90:4; 2Pe 3:8

    In his book Galileo Galilei, biographer L. Geymonat noted: “Narrow-minded theologians who wanted to limit science on the basis of biblical reasoning would do nothing but cast discredit upon the Bible itself.”5 That they did. Actually, it was the theologians’ interpretation of the Bible—not the Bible itself—that put unreasonable constraints on science.

    Similarly, religious fundamentalists today distort the Bible when they insist that the earth was created in six 24-hour days. (Genesis 1:3-31) Such a view agrees neither with science nor with the Bible. In the Bible, as in everyday speech, the word “day” is a flexible term, expressing units of time of varying lengths. At Genesis 2:4, all six creative days are referred to as one all-embracing “day.” The Hebrew word translated “day” in the Bible can simply mean “a long time.”6 So, there is no Biblical reason to insist that the days of creation were 24 hours each. By teaching otherwise, fundamentalists misrepresent the Bible.—See also 2 Peter 3:8.However, let this one fact not be escaping YOUR notice, beloved ones, that one day is with Jehovah as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. 9 Jehovah is not slow respecting his promise, as some people consider slowness, but he is patient with YOU because he does not desire any to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance

    • Genesis 1:4 describes the word day in one simple word...."Light".
      ...and God called the light day and he called the darkness night.
      How simple is that? God didn't create during the darkness.
      John 11:9 Jesus answered, are there not 12 hours in the day?

    It is true that lots of people do believe that God created the earth and everything in it in six 24 hour days and yes, God could have done that if he wanted to. It is true there are lots of illustrations in the Bible that taught the men of old a lesson as well as to teach us that didn't really happen, but were written for our instruction. And as you said there are metaphors. If you go to the Bible and read (2 Peter 3:8) it says; "However, let this one fact not be escaping your notice, beloved ones, that one day is with Jehovah as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day". So this means that God's time and numbers, and humans are different. All that matters is that we are here and we are alive. I hope I have answered your question.

  • It so certainly DOES mean 'day' that even someone of great Hebrew scholarship (who was not a 6-day Creationist) admits without reservation that is what Genesis is saying :

    Professor James Barr, former Oriel Professor of the interpretation of the Holy Scripture at Oxford University, wrote:

    ...probably, so far as I know, there is no professor of Hebrew or Old Testament at any world-class university who does not believe that the writer(s) of Genesis 1–11 intended to convey to their readers the ideas that: ... creation took place in a series of six days which were the same as the days of 24 hours we now experience ... Or, to put it negatively, the apologetic arguments which suppose the "days" of creation to be long eras of time ... are not taken seriously by any such professors, as far as I know.

    • Days were 12 hours long and the nights were 12 hours long.
      If a day had 24 hours in it how long were the nights?

    The length of a day is the least of the problems one will face when trying to prove a Six Day Creation. One has to contend with the geologic column, radiometric dating, fossils, dendrochronology, the true age of the universe, the true age of our solar system, not to mention the contradictions between Genesis 1 and 2 and reality. For example, how can you fit the Cambrian Explosion into a Six Day Creation model and still explain Precambrian life or how can you explain the evolution of life which is clearly illustrated by the fossil record and do all that without invoking something supernatural?

  • We believe that the world was created in 6 days. This does not mean that it was definitely created for 6 days straight. There could have been gaps between the days.

    God created everything in six 12 hour days. God did not create anything at night. Each day had a MORNING and an EVENING

    These words are Hebrew words, God created Time before language was made on earth.

    God's time consist of 4 each A TIME, 2 each TIMES, and 1 HALF-A-TIME, only concerning Dominant life on earth.

    However, each of these TIMES, 7 in all, and are aslo known as 7 seals are made up of 49 generations each.

    As each seal is completed God the Father begans the next seal, generation minus 1 zero (-0).

    Therefore, A TIME in the 1st generation (1st seal) is;

    196 million years or 1 generation = 4,000,000 years, therefore 1 day = 28 million years.

    2nd seal 19,6 milion years or 1 generation = 400,000 years, therefore 1 day = 2.8 million years.

    3rd seal 1,96 million years or 1 generation = 40,000 years, therefore 1 day = 280 thousand years.

    4th seal 196 thousand years or 1 generation = 4,000 years, therefore 1 day = 28 thousand years.

    The 5th seal would have been 19,6 thousand years or 1 generation = 400 years, therefore 1 day would have = 2,8 thousand years, but God changeth TIMES and SEASONS.

    Therefore the;

    5th seal 1,960 years or 1 generation = 40 years, therefore 1 day = 280 years.

    6th seal 1,960 years or 1 generation = 40 years, therefore 1 day = 280 years.

    7th sea; 980 yers or 1 generation = 20 years, therefore 1 day =140 years.

    A SEASON is = to 7 generations and the lenght of 1 generation depends upon in what seal the Season is from.

    A Little season = 1 generation and the lenght of 1 little season depends upon in what seal the little season is from;

    EXAMPLE: Dainel 8:14, 12:11 and 12:12 were first made in the 4th seal, therefore, 1 generation in the 4th seal = 4,000 years. To find the correct TIME, 2300 days (2) two more zeros must be added after the 2 (two) making the number 2300 to know read 200300.

    All numbers given in days are to be divided by 360, and the actual year, month, day, hour and mintue is revealed as to the actual time the prophecy was or is to be fulfilled.

    God's TIME is a countdown by generations. We are now in the 7th seal, and each trumpet shall be sounded every 140 years starting January 1, 1960 AD and ending with the 7 utterances beginning January, 2800 AD, in which 1 utterance will be spoken by God each 20 years.

    The 2nd trumpet will be sounded on January 1, 2100 AD

    The 1st woe will began 2240 AD

    The 2nd woe will began 2380 AD

    The 3rd woe will began 2520 AD

    The end shall come in the year 2940 AD

    • And where in the Bible did you find this?

    Day can also mean a period of time. Ie as in my fathers day. Father can also mean the person or event that causes something to happen. Words have lots of different meaning which are constantly changing. Look at the word gay, in a few decades it has gone from meaning happy, to homosexual to lame. :)

    Words are too easily manipulated, especially when being translated from ancient to modern. The ancients did not have our literal mind sets. Their concepts were abstract and allegorical.

    I imagine the rotation of the earth was much slower at the time of it's creation. God may have had to have the days slow so the temperature could be perfected. A full day could have been equivalent to a thousand years at that time. Who knows?
