does a colt 45 gun hold a clip or magazine and how many rounds of ammo in the clip?

I am researching a book, I know nothing about guns. Is it a magazine or a clip and how many rounds does it hold?

The Colt 1911 semi auto .45 ACP pistol uses a magazine. Most stock magazines for the gun will hold 7 rounds. Some manufactures make a magazine that will hold 8 rounds.

Colt also makes a gun that uses the .45 Long Colt round. It is a single action revolver that hold six rounds. It does not use a magazine or a clip.

You got two basic Colt 45s,

The Colt Single Action Army Revolvers which use the Colt 45 Long Colt. These are six shot recolvers. The next is the Colt Model 1911 Semi-auto pistol. This uses a magazine and is known for shooting the 45 ACP (automatic Colt pistol) but you can find them chamberfed in other rounds now days like 9mm and the 38 Super. The general full size 1911 Mgazine holds either 7 or 8rds while a compact 1911 will hold 6rds. As you may have guessed, the 1911 was developed in the year 1911 and is still widely used today. Now both Colt and Smith & Wesson chambered a revolver with the 45 ACP back in the 1910's~.

A magazine holds the ammo, while a clip helps load the ammo. And the Colt .45 1911 holds 7 rounds in the magazine, some hold 8, and then another in the chamber (so 7+1 or 8+1).

The Colt 45 is general known as a single action revolver, the Colt 45 acp is the 1911 style semi-automatic pistol which uses a magazine that hols 7 or 8 rounds. Magazines are not the same thing as clips although many people call magazines clips.

Magazines refer to any device which completely encloses the ammunition and advances the next round by means of a spring and follower. For example, there are the box magazines commonly used on AR-15 rifles or any number of semi-auto pistols. There are also tubular magazines, most commonly found on semi-auto or pump action shotguns and .22 rifles, and Winchester style lever action firearms. One often forgotten magazine is the rotary magazine, which is found in the Ruger 10/22 rifle and also the Savage 99E and 99F. Clip is an appropriate term to refer to a device that simply holds a number of rounds together. You can google stripper clips, M-1 Garand clips, moon clips and half moon clips, and even clips for the WWII 40mm anti-aircraft guns common aboard naval warships.

Now to your question, a Colt 45 Peacemaker revolver, also known as the Single Action Army, uses a .45 Long Colt cartridge that does not require either magazine or clip. The cartridge is held in place in the cylinder by means of a rim that is part of the cartridge case. The Colt revolver model of 1917 fires the .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) cartridge, which is rimless, and utilizes either moon clips or half moon clips to hold the cartridges in place. Both are six shooters. The .45 Colt Pistol, Model of 1911, is a semi automatic pistol, utilizing a 7 round magazine. Colt also offered an "Officers" model with a six round magazine. Several manufacturers of magazines offer magazines for the full size Model 1911 with capacities or 8 or even 10 rounds. Hope this helps you with your research. You'll need to specify in your paper if you are writing about the model of 1911 or the Single Action Army, both of which are referred to as Colt .45's.

Assuming that you mean the famous Colt 1911 .45 acp the answer is 'magazine' and seven to eight rounds per magazine. The original magazines held seven rounds, newer magazines have a capacity of eight giving the Colt a total ammo capacity of eight or nine with one in the chamber depending on which magazine you are using. After market magazines are available that protrude below the magazine well and hold up to twenty rounds but these are cumbersome and sometimes unreliable.

The proper term is a magazine, typically they hold 7-8 .45 ACP rounds. If you are talking about a standard colt 1911...Colt also makes a Colt Single Action Army, it is a revolver and holds 6 rounds for .45 long.
