Why is the IRS called Internal Revenue Service?

Has the IRS ever generated revenue and is the government supposed to have revenue?

Would you approve if we changed the name to the International Redistribution Service?

It is a service to confiscate by way of taxation the revenue generated internally by the citizens of this country and to redistribute that money to politicians who use it to buy the votes of people who are too lazy to fend for themselves.

Always thought it was the Infernal Revenue Service, going by the way they treat the taxpayers.

Because at one time the USA was set up to use tariffs (or external revenue) as it's primary source of funding.
