It has originally come from "short hand writing" this has been used for many centuries, which developed into abbreviation writing hence "he was laughin out loud" When the internet was more widely used throughout the world people added there own abbreviations which has developed.

    KOL maybe

I used to chat on KOL as a kid all the time and when you first start using chat they showed all the abbreviations though rofl and lmao are pretty new so KOL probably didnt invent those.
