Why and how to backup - MacBook Pro?

I've been on forums, websites about Mac and things of that nature, and ppl are saying to backup your Mac/they've backed-up their Macs.

Why would I need to backup my MacBook Pro? And how can I do it -- are there any programs?

    1) Buy an external drive that is at least twice the capacity of the drive in your MBP.

    2) Plug it in.

    3) Make sure it is selected in System Preferences to be used by Time Machine.

    There is no step 4.

Backing up your computer is making a copy of everything on your computer and storing it on an external hardrive. The reason to do this is to protect your files if your computer crashes (fairly unlikely but does happen even though you have one of the best laptops on earth) or gets stolen, or something like that. The best and most efficient way to do it is to get an external hardrive, depending on what you do on your laptop a 500gb probably would be more than enough. All macs are preloaded with a backing up program called Time Machine. There's a little icon on the top bar near your clock, wireless internet icon and battery icon, that looks sort of like an analog clock. Once you have your external hardrive, plug it in to your computer and open up time machine preferences. Set up the external hardrive as your time machine backup and the computer will do the rest, all you will have to do is click back up now. Time machine will copy everything from files to preferences right down to icon placement on the desktop, so if you were to have to get a new macpro, all you would have to do is plug in your time machine and your new computer would be loaded up exactly as your old one was. Hope this helps

Time Machine is the backup program that comes standard with Leopard and Snow Leopard operating systems. Just hook up an external hard drive and it comes up automatically. Very nice, very reliable and very easy.

it's always a good idea to backup any personal computer because if it suddenly explodes (not literally), then you could lose all your data. if you have your data backed up, you can't lose it. you can back up your mac by buying an external harddrive (you can buy them from apple or you can buy non apple ones that are compatible with mac os X).
