How has African art changed?

I have to do an essay on African Art; the traditional and modern. Please help explain how it has changed over the past century or two :)

Today, there is no such thing as African art, only art by Africans, many of whom live abroad. If you go to this link you can read about a typical exhibition of art by well known African artists (including photographers). http://www.midnighteast.com/mag/?p=2924 As you will read, the art of these artists is international but their themes are based on suffering and loss.

African art as we think of it, what I think you describes as traditional - masks, totems etc. was connected to ancient beliefs and was not made to be sold. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_art

You might also mention, as a side point, that in the early 20th century, Picasso, Gauguin and many other European artists working in Paris particular, were inspired by African artifacts coming into Europe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picasso's_African_Per...

Hi, i LIVE in south africa, and i would say that African art (zulu's, Ndebele's, Sotho's - that is the name of the bush-people that did and does the african art in the caves etc) has not changed that much, what makes it a treasure is that there were only a few original drawings found in caves - that is considered historical and it being protected, there are a lot of fake ones as well. In the case of the modern art i would say it has changed a lot - for the better, bare in mind that all of the african art are mostly abstract and very bright now days...the african people are more educated therefore can do more and or what they aspire to do...you can mail me for info...
