I have a top loader washing machine, but my mom has a GE front loader & my MIL has a Samsung front loader ($$$$$$).
I think her Samsung front loader is nice... it has a LOT more options than my top loader, and it's digital rather than having knobs. You can delay the start time, select water temperature, fabric settings, and level of soiling, which is nice. I think it cleans better & you can wash more clothes with less detergent. Some even have steam clean settings. However, it's like a $3,000 washing machine... my top loader isn't the best thing, but it was only $250-ish.
My mom's front loader (GE) is garbage though. She got it about 7 years ago when front loaders started becoming really popular luxury items. I know, it's kind of old, but within 3 years of having it, it had sooo many problems. For a while, it kept spitting stuff out onto laundry, leaving black waxy spots on everything. Now it's just junk... And I personally think a washer & dryer should still work well (even if outdated) for at least 10 years. I mean, yes, you can buy a new one if you want, but they should still work reliably during that whole time.
One thing I do like about front loaders is that larger items like blankets, comforters, etc. can be washed since there is no spinny thing in the middle. And they also automatically distribute detergent, bleach, and softener at the right time.
