I KNOW I could do a better job then Omar Mineya. I know I could be a Major League GM - no question about it.
You mentioned a lot of names but really the only guy on that list I would want is Molina. Jon Garland isn't worth the money he wanted, I think he had a nice few years but I don't expect to be that good in Boston. Jason Marquis is AWFUL - he has very average stuff and again he had a good Free Agent year and wasn't near worth the money - no way. I've seen Marquis pitch for years with the Cubs and Cards and I don't know how he could win 10 games a year - on a Met team, yikes.
Huff is a lot older and he's had some issues but if the price was right, yeah he would of been a nice move. However, Huff isn't an answer - he's sort of a platoon type player at this point. Clearly, the Mets need to do something about 1st base. I know they plan on going with Murphy, who I really like, but we have to be prepared if Murphy isn't the hitter we all think he is. I know the Blue Jays are trying to move Lyle Overbay and I think Overbay in Citi-Field would be a doubles machine.
Bay was a good move - except the problem was they could of gotten Bay 2 years ago when the Pirates were trying to move him because of salary. You may recall Moises Alou was the starting LF - another "great" move by Omar Mineya (still incredibly bitter about that). Sadly, Mineya signed Castillo that big 2 year contract - I'm still speechless about that one - for the record, I loved Castillo as the number 2 hitter BACK IN 2004! What bothers me even more - I know Orlando Hudson is out there and the Mets have wanted him BUT Daniel Murphy is a natural 3rd basemen and can't play the OF and he should be at 2B. Murphy NEVER played the OF until he became a Major Leaguer, he NEVER played 1st base until he was a Major Leaguer - the easiest position for a 3b to transfer to is 2nd. Now can you imagine if the Mets put Murphy at 2nd? Can you imagine the first time playing a position is in the Major Leagues. How great would that of been - then they can get a power hitting 1st baseman, Murph at 2nd, Reyes at SS and Wright at 3rd. Nice infield.
Also - if I was the Met GM, Reyes would of been traded after the end of the 2008 year. I think they should of made a move with Reyes in November 2008 with the Dodgers. If you recall in November 2008, the Dodgers had all these Free Agents, didn't know where Manny was going to sign, had no offense - Reyes would of been wanted badly by them. What the Dodgers would of given up - well that's a good question but there are 2 guys on the Dodgers that I LOVE - Clayton Kershaw (who was a raw lefty in 08) and Russell Martin the Catcher.
I think what the Mets really need right now is a starter. I legit number 2 - if they could swing that then the pitching staff gets so much better. To have Maine and Pelfrey in the 3/4 spot - that's a good place to be. I'm still a fan of Ollie Perez and I'm not going to go after Mineya on that one - I think as some point, OIlie Perez is going to be very good - he's got the stuff, he just needs to get his straight.
So lets go by position
C - Mets don't really have one - Molina would of been the guy to get
1B - They are going with Murphy but is that smart? I wouldn't be surprise if Delgado is resigned (at a discount of course) 1B is another Omar Mineya disaster
2B - Castillo - Omar Mineya Disaster - although you can't knock Castillo on his play. He played well when he wasn't hurt - but he plays "lazy" and he's old - big contract/old man - and hispanic (shocker).
SS - Reyes - I don't know about Reyes - this should be his last year as a Met unless he as a MVP type year. I still would trade him if I had a chance to get good talent bacl
3B - David Wright - Love David Wright and I would like to know how healthy he was last year. Still, he hit .306 last year - worried about his power - he was unprotected in the lineup.
LF - Jason Bay - well, Omar had to make that move. Could of had him 2 years ago
CF - Beltran - who the hell knows when he going to play.
CF - Matthews - send the Angels a good hooker and a case of beer - Matthews isn't going to be a MVP or great player but he's only costing us $2 million - may be valuable this year as the season goes on. I think he may or Beltran will go to RF depending on how Francour
RF - I live Francour - he's been a guy who people have been expecting be a superstar - if he can cut his Strike Outs, I think he can take the next step up the ladder.
OF - Fernando Martinez has looked GREAT in the Caribbean World Series.
OF - Angel Pagan - I really like what I saw from him - can't stay healthy though.
SP - One good pitcher away from being a good staff. Maine and Pelfrey are good. Santana is Santana - I had heard a rumor a few weeks ago about the Cubs wanting to move Carlos Zambrano and the Mets/Cubs were talking - don't know who was involved but still. If Carlos Beltran was involved - that make sense - Cubs need a goo
