Is it better to live near the beach in california, or live in the downtown area?

For the Los Angeles area.
The beach is nice if you can afford it (very expensive) and it is near your work. If not, traffic can take forever and that's not a good thing. Nice beach towns are Santa Monica (but some of it is icky), Marina del Rey, Venice (some ickiness, but very interesting), Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach.
Downtown is good if you work a job where you'll have to be for many hours a day, like a new attorney or doctor. Otherwise, you want to live someplace else most likely. Pasadena if you're not a late night person during the week, but weekends are good. West Hollywood, Culver City, West LA, if you like more night life during the week and weekends.
You want to live near your work if at all possible, so you don't have a sucky commute.

The beach always wins over downtown LA. I think cableguy pretty much got it right for LA. Further south is Seal Beach, Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. And If you don't mind the commute a bit further south in Laguna Beach and Dana Point are nice too.
