Learn table manners before dinner party
Given our dress-down zeitgeist, many people today dine at
restaurants where the only utensils required are forks for the
chow fun or fingers for the fajitas. So is it really all that important
to know which fork to use?
Absolutely, according to Deborah Ritch, president of RitchImage,
an image and etiquette consulting firm in Arizona. ~~We have
customs and rules to show respect for our fellow human beings.
Dining customs are one of the most important~~says Ritch,
a social strategist who conducts etiquette seminars.
For a formal event, each course is usually served separately on its
accompanying dinnerware, but sometimes everything is laid out
at once. Let us say you have put on the tux or fur
(faux, of course) and are enjoying a formal meal in a nice
restaurant. Or maybe you are hosting an elegant dinner party
or dining at one. Where do you begin?
In a formal place setting, all that silverware may appear intimidating,
but it need not be if you remember three simple letters: WIN.
This stands for work in. Start with the utensil that is farthest from
your main meal plate and work your way in, using one utensil
for each course.
Forks are always positioned to the left of the plate (on which the
napkin rests vertically). First is the fish fork on the farthest left,
followed by the dinner fork and, closest to the plate, the salad fork.
In a formal dinner, the salad is often served after the main course.
This is because salad is thought to aid digestion.
