A month passed from when John Brown was sentenced to when he was hanged... How does that period of time?
relate to prisoners on death row in today's society?

Justice was swift in John Brown's day, and even well into the 20th century for that matter.
The swiftness of justice caused mistakes to happen and truly innocent people were executed. In the post-Furman era, there are a number of automatic appeals. Death sentences are examined and re-examined to ensure due process of law is followed and an actually innocent person is not executed. This has led to executions taking years, even decades, to be carried out.
