5 years ago, Jay Leno announced he was going to retire in 2009 and the Tonight Show would move to Conan O'Brian, and Late Night would move to Jimmy Fallon.
Flash Forward several years and Jay doesn't want to retire. NBC got a LOT of ratings from the Tonight Show and they wanted to keep Leno around so they gave him a spot during prime time at 10 pm. Leno would do his show, then there would be the local news, and then at 11:35 Tonight with Conan would start. For a while that seemed to work.
But once Jay Leno's show kicked off in September, it didn't do so well. 17 million viewers turned in for the first episode, then dropped to 6 million for the second, and then pittered off to 1-2 million in the next weeks. That actually started to jeopardize the NBC local news shows as well, since people weren't sticking around to watch Leno and then the news, they were moving to other networks like ABC.
NBC decided to remedy that by giving Leno back his spot at 11:35...AFTER the local news. The new Jay Leno Show would run 30 minutes 11:35-12:05 and then Tonight with Conan would pick up at 12:05. The problem with that is, Jay Leno's show is not interesting. He is doing the same old stuff he did on the tonight show.
By moving him back to his tonight show spot and keeping the same old material he used to do for Tonight, it's pretty much just Tonight with Jay Leno followed by "Later Tonight" with Conan. It's not fair to Conan, who relocated his entire family to LA for this job.
Jay Leno does not have the ratings he used to have. It's time for him to leave the late night scene and to let Conan step up and take over the Tonight Show like was originally planned.
