can you have dial up internet without a phone line?

We're in a Really rural area and can't get DSL. We can only get dial up internet. We rarely ever use our home phone since our cell phones get such great reception at our home. Is it possible to get dial up internet without the phone line?

No, but you might look into an Aircard with a wireless access point. Verizon has the standard USB deal, but they also have a deck of card looking Wireless modem that lets 5 users log in at once. Netgear, and I'm sure others, make a router that you plug an aircard into. The Netgear is very limited, but they're always adding things, so maybe you can even get one for, say Sprint, AT&T, or T-Mobile.

The answer is "No." The term "dial-up" refers to the actual process of a modem acquiring a dial tone from a LANDLINE and then making a connection. This would be impossible to do without a phone line that produces a dial tone.

when was the last time you checked to see if your line qualified for DSL... they have made improvements recently with the technology, and are able to send the signal a little further out than the 18,000 ft loop length than they used to be able to ...

other options include FiOS (verizon) or U-Verse (att) fiber to the home if your area is strung up for it..

satellite - faster than dial up... slower than most other high speed connections and expensive

cellular... EVDO for CDMA networks like sprint or verizon, and HSPDA for GSM networks like ATT or TMOB

    cable modem...

Call you mobile phone provider. they might have a service for you where you gonna use a 3G modem (USB device) to connect to your computer. It uses current cellular signals so if you get good signals from your mobile phone, you'll get good internet connection too.

Nope don't think that is possible. Try looking into satellite internet - hughes and wildblue are two I know of.
