The Afghan government suffers from corruption within as former warlords have taken up positions of authority. There is also a lack of accountability and transparency from the government towards the people. As a result of the corruption within the government, there are very few opportunities for the people of Afghanistan to engage in legitimate economic endeavours and they thus resort to illegal ones such as growing poppies for the drug trade because the Taliban give them better protection and stability than their own government. The people of Afghanistan have begun to lose faith in their own government as well as the international forces that had promised to protect them from the tyrannical Taliban. The government has invested very little in economic and social infrastructure, which would help begin to establish a stable and prosperous Afghanistan but the lack of opportunities provided from the government lead to the continued presence of the Taliban in the region.

    1. The Afgan government is too small and weak to control it's own people.

    2. It is also quite corrupt, which reduces its effectiveness even further.

    3. Many Afgans live in the mountainous region, which is remote and almost impossible to govern. People in that region generally haven't recognized any government for about 3000 years.
